This is mug number 1 in a series of Sugar Skull pottery I’m making in 2020. For this series I used a very dark brown clay body. When the pot dried out a bit, I attached a handle and then painstakingly applied underglazes, carved in the details and carved again. This design is intense and takes about 2.5 hours to paint and carve by hand.
The outside of the mug is unglazed, aside from the colorful underglazes. The inside is glazed “box wine”.
The sugar skull mug is 5.5 inches wide and 4 inches tall. It holds 18oz of fluid.
Mug #1 is the biggest in the series and it’s the only one with the boxed wine glaze.
I use pottery unglazed on the outside (but glazed on the inside) daily. You can put it in the microwave and the dishwasher but note that because I throw pretty thin, you may want to avoid the microwave as the pottery does get quite hot since there is less volume to absorb the heat.
