I LOVE this time a year, especially when the leaves start to change color. These leaf peeping mugs are inspired by Fall in the North East.
The mug started out on the pottery wheel using a very dark brown clay body. When it dried out to the leather hard stage, I added a handle and used underglazes to pain on a the fall leaves. Then I used a tool to fill in all the details. This technique is called sgraffito.
The outside of the mug is unglazed and the inside of the mug is glazed a brilliant red. The mug is 5 inches wide with the handle and a little under 3.75 inches tall. It holds approx. 13oz of fluid.
I use pottery in my daily life that is unglazed on the outside. You can safely put it in the microwave and dishwasher (although that may shorten the life of the pottery), but please keep in mind that since I tend to throw very thin, your pottery may get hotter in the microwave than you are used to.
