These pottery coffee mugs are hand thrown by me Milly Welsh of Zwellyn Pottery. After they dried out to the point where they are considered “leather hard”, I applied a black underglaze. Once that dried, I also hand carved each mug in my swirl style. This is a technique called sgraffito. They are made with a speckled clay body and fired to mid-range in an electric kiln.
They come in a range of colors on the inside, including yellow, red, blue, orange, purple, maroon and green for the inside color.
The outside of the mugs are glazed with a thin application of a glaze called oatmeal.
Update: I currently have 10 in stock…2 green, 2 blue, 2 purple, 2 yellow, and 2 orange.
Sizes will vary but they are generally about 4.5 inches tall and 5.5 inches wide. The hold approximately 18 – 19oz of fluid. Keep in mind that sizes will vary because this is a handmade item.
All of the glazes used on the Swirl Sgraffito style mugs are made with lead free glazes!
All Zwellyn Pottery coffee mugs are microwave and dishwasher safe.
When I carve these mugs, I don’t like to think to much. I let the unconscious energy of the universe take over. No two are exactly alike, they are all one of a kind.
